What’s Really Happening
In recent technical reviews across several packaging lines, a pattern has emerged.
The issue is often not caused by printer failure or equipment limitations. Instead, it lies in the interaction between ink, material, and environment.
Several recurring factors have been identified:
- Low surface energy materials, such as certain plastics, make it difficult for ink to properly adhere
- Residual moisture or oil creates an invisible barrier on the surface
- Ink formulations are sometimes selected based on cost, rather than compatibility
- Printing distance or timing is not precisely calibrated
Individually, each factor may seem minor. Combined, they create unstable results.
A Common Misconception
Many operators assume that if a code looks good at the moment of printing, the job is done.
However, in industrial coding, initial appearance does not guarantee long-term performance.
Durability — especially after handling, stacking, or transport — is where real reliability is tested.
As one production supervisor noted during a site visit:
“We didn’t realize there was a problem until the codes started fading in the warehouse. By then, it was already too late.”
A Real Case from the Field
In one beverage packaging facility, clear date codes were printed on plastic bottles during production.
At first, everything appeared normal. But after distribution, reports came back that codes could be wiped off with light friction.
After investigation, two issues were identified:
- The ink used was not optimized for that specific plastic surface
- The printhead distance exceeded the recommended range, affecting droplet formation
Instead of replacing the equipment, adjustments were made:
- Switching to a higher-adhesion ink
- Recalibrating the print distance and trigger timing
The result was immediate — stable, durable codes without additional hardware investment.
Why This Matters More Than It Seems
As packaging materials evolve — especially with the increased use of recyclable plastics and coated surfaces — adhesion challenges are becoming more common.
At the same time, traceability requirements are becoming stricter across industries such as food, pharmaceuticals, and logistics.
This means coding is no longer just about printing clearly.
It is about ensuring that the code remains readable throughout the entire lifecycle of the product.

The industry is gradually shifting toward a more integrated approach to coding.
Rather than focusing solely on the printer, more attention is being given to:
- Material compatibility
- Ink formulation
- Environmental conditions
- System calibration
