This portable concept takes printing back to its earliest days.

As the number of digital documents increases, printed paper seems to be on the verge of becoming obsolete. Of course, this is not the case, and more books and documents are being printed every day of the year. Printing has been central to our civilization approximately 6,000 years ago when humans invented a method of putting ink on paper without manually writing each letter. Of course, fortunately, printing evolved from sheets of metal or wood printed with ink on parchment, but over time it also became more detached and less personal. Of course, it’s a matter of practicality and survival in the nascent printing press industry, and we can’t imagine going back to that hackneyed past. However, you probably don’t have to go that far to feel the past with this rather exotic device that lets you type by hand, almost literally.
Handheld printers are not really anything new, but they are often designed for very specific use cases. These small boxes are often used to print small photographs, usually in the popular Polaroid format. In fact, they look more like specialized portable photo printers than what you use to print documents. There are other portable printer designs that are a long strip that needs to be held still as you move it down the page.
The DUAL is a concept device that attempts to combine the best of both worlds by offering a handheld or portable printer that, ironically, does not need to be held all the time while using it. At the bottom, there are rollers that move the paper, or the paper itself, across a flat surface, automating that part of the process. Of course, you can still rest your hands on the device’s tent-like form factor for a more direct interaction with the print.
The design of the DUAL is unique as it sits on the edge between a conventional printer and a portable printer. It takes up less space on your desk than a cassette printer, but it’s not easy to toss in your bag and take with you. It has the advantage of being more aesthetically pleasing than conventional printers and can be a fun decorative element when not in use.
The non-traditional design of the printer means that it also requires non-traditional ink cartridges. Instead of typical block or long cartridges, DUAL uses a special rounded rectangular container that contains all four colors. Given the portability of the device, it may be more efficient to use one of the inkless printing methods, although this in turn requires the use of special paper.
The name DUAL actually comes not from its shape, but from its function. It also has a scanner on the top half of the device that can scan documents or images just like you would with a handheld bar scanner. Considering this feature, DUAL is actually TRIO as you can effectively duplicate documents by scanning them and then printing them. It’s really the same as how these multifunction printers copy documents, except you have to do more by hand as before.
