        Epson knows how frustrating ink cartridges can be, and that inspired the EcoTank printers. With large refillable cartridges, your inkjet printer can run for a long time without worrying about ink. When it’s time to refill your EcoTank, you can refill it from a bottle, getting rid of the waste inherent in cartridges.
       It sounded like a good idea, so we tested it to see how well it would work with the inexpensive Epson EcoTank ET-2850 all-in-one printer.
        The neutral white body of the EcoTank ET-2850 looks attractive enough to blend in with homes and offices. It is also available in black if desired. It’s fairly compact for a candy bar, measuring 17.6 inches by 22.3 inches and only 10.7 inches tall.
        Epson wants you to know that this is no ordinary inkjet printer, and the visible ink reservoirs on the front do just that. Cyan, magenta, yellow, and black ink tanks have translucent panels that show remaining ink. You can’t make out the individual colors behind the plastic, but it’s nice to see the ink levels and huge printability at a glance.
        You can fill these tanks with Epson ink bottles, and each tank has enough ink to last for over a year of printing. It’s simple: just unscrew the bottle, pour it into the desired reservoir and wait for the printer to fill it up. There is a chart inside the printer that reminds you not to squeeze the bottle when refilling so that you don’t forget about it for a long period of time. It takes a little over a minute to completely fill with black, and for each color it takes only about 30 seconds.
        Epson notes that some of the included ink was used to charge the system during initial setup. Future replacement inks should produce more prints per bottle.
        The center console is tilted upwards for easy viewing and contains a 1.4-inch color display with action buttons on the sides. The display easily guides you through tasks, but the two buttons have unusual symbols that can be confusing on such a small display. A touch screen would be more convenient.
        The rear paper tray holds up to 100 sheets, which is the low side, but the Epson EcoTank ET-2850 isn’t a business printer, so that’s not a problem. You probably switch back and forth between plain paper and photo paper on a regular basis. Clearly labeled trays let you know which side to load paper is facing up, and size guides are easy to adjust.
        The Epson EcoTank ET-2850 isn’t the fastest printer, but you probably won’t mind if you don’t want it to print out a bunch of documents quickly. Black and white documents print at about 10 pages per minute (ppm), while color documents print at half the speed. If you’re after speed, laser printers tend to print multiple pages much faster than inkjet printers.
        Photos on 4″ x 6″ paper print quickly and look great. The print resolution is 4800 x 1200 dpi, eliminating pixelation in high quality photos. The EcoTank ET-2850 prints were crisp and colorful enough for my everyday printing needs, and maybe even good enough for special projects. If you need brighter, more accurate colors, Epson introduces 6-color EcoTank printers that deliver photo-quality printing for professionals.
        I noticed a slight bluish tint a few times, but after setting the inkjet paper type to Photo Quality, the tones in the photos became accurate. I chose this setting even when printing on glossy paper.
        Epson EcoTank ET-2850 is an all-in-one printer that includes a flatbed scanner. It can scan at up to 1200 dpi, four times faster than some competing printers. It took about two minutes to scan the entire page with so many details, but all the details were preserved. This rivals the resolution of some of the best dedicated scanners.
        The OCR function can save scanned documents as searchable PDF, which is a special function. OCR quality varies and is best suited for high quality, modern documents. An old article that I typed on my typewriter many years ago, my eyes are clear but I have trouble recognizing characters.
        The EcoTank ET-2850 can also be used as a copier and has options to reduce or enlarge documents. Epson also offers free templates to help you get started on creative projects.
        Epson EcoTank ET-2850 is compatible with Windows, macOS, iOS and Android. You don’t need to install drivers on your Windows PC or Mac, but getting the latest software is a good idea to ensure you have access to all features. Apps for iPhone and Android let you check ink levels and print remotely.
       For many printers, installing the mobile app on a smartphone and following the instructions is the fastest way, but for some reason the Epson SmartPanel app won’t connect to the EcoTank ET-2850 from my iPhone or Android phone.
        After a few minutes, I switched to manual setup, which was much easier. I recommend installing the EcoTank ET-2850 with physical buttons and display to avoid this problem. Once set up, it’s easy to connect via smartphone or computer.
        I started testing on my iPhone and immediately noticed that I had to set the paper size in both the printer and the mobile app whenever I changed paper. If I go away and forget to select the media type and size, I will have to go back to the printer before printing. Luckily, you can disable these annoying warnings by turning off “Error Notifications” in the paper source settings.
        The Epson EcoTank ET-2850 sells for $350, but typically costs around $300. It comes with four bottles of starter ink. According to Epson, a full set of ink bottles is enough for two years of printing. Sounds incredibly long, but I can confirm that the inkwells are huge. Ink levels barely changed even after printing 26 color documents, 29 4×6 photo prints, and two borderless full-page color photos.
        Epson estimates that the ink in the bottle set is equivalent to 90 ink cartridges totaling over $1,000. By these standards, the EcoTank ET-2850 is a steal. The included ink bottles are rated for 6,500 pages black and 5,200 pages color. The resource of future replaceable ink bottles should be 7500 pages (black) and 6000 pages (color).
        Epson offers a very generous two-year warranty, double that of most printers in this price range. You might want to set the EcoTank ET-2850 as your default printer to take advantage of its long warranty and virtually unlimited ink supply.
        It’s hard to go wrong with the Epson EcoTank ET-2850. This is a great all-in-one device for home use that takes away all the hassle of changing ink. After the initial setup, you just need to access the printer to change paper, copy or scan.
        The software has some quirks that can make setup more difficult than it should be, and the paper replacement warning was pretty annoying until I figured out how to turn it off. Most things work fine, but I’ve never been able to get duplex printing on any device, not even a Windows PC.
        The initial cost is higher than a budget printer model, but if you plan to print frequently, you will make great progress in a few months. With the EcoTank ET-2850, the biggest limitation is paper, not ink. The slower speed can be a problem if you plan to print long documents or many color documents.
       Other than that, the Epson EcoTank ET-2850 is a great all-in-one inkjet printer with superb photo quality, and I recommend it to anyone who wants to avoid the waste and expense associated with cartridges.
