With the launch of DualSense Edge this week, gamers around the world will be able to get their hands on Sony’s first PS5 pro controller, but as you look to the future, you might be wondering what about replacing the DualSense Edge analog controller? module?
The DualSense Edge is a great first attempt at the manufacturer, PlayStation, which has taken the already excellent DualSense controller and outfitted it with all sorts of high-quality and customizable features. There are trigger short stops, a back button, various quick switch profiles, and a deep connection to the PS5 system settings to adjust the sensitivity of the analog sticks. These features include the ability to swap analog sticks, and Sony has created custom analog stick modules so you don’t have to see the circuit board. This is a great feature for those who are worried about wear and tear on their analog sticks by pressing L3/R3 in action games, or dirt causing them to drift because you don’t have to buy expensive replacements. However, each stick costs $20/£20.
The DualSense Edge has a smooth bezel around the analog stick, PS button, speaker and microphone. This hides and protects the analog stick module that needs to be removed.
It is held in place by a latch on the back of the controller labeled “Release”. Slide it off with your fingernail or something like a pen, fork, or toothpick, and the panel will pop open. Now you can lift it above the analog stick and pull it out.
The analog stick modules are secured with metal buckles on the left side of the left stick and on the right side of the right stick. Simply lift them up about 90º to release the modules.
Replacing the analog joystick module is as simple as doing the process in reverse. The modules are identical, so they can be used in both left and right positions. Just make sure the stick module is oriented correctly, the pin headers are inserted into the controller body, and the Fn buttons are facing out, then slide it into the guides like a printer cartridge. Push it until it stops moving easily. There is no click, but if you lower the metal cover, it will press and lock.
Now install the plastic bezel onto the analog stick by first securing it with the two plastic tabs on the top edge and then snapping the bottom edge into place.
Congratulations, you have replaced your DualSense Edge analog sticks! Or, more likely, you want to take the controller apart and successfully put it back together!
